Assalamualaikum,

Pada 8hb Disember 2011, saya telah diamanahkan untuk mengendalikan bengkel bahan bantu mengajar anjuran Persatuan Tadika Islam Malaysia atau ringkasnya PERTIM di SIRIM Shah Alam. Sepanjang program dijalankan didapati semua peserta sangat bersemangat menyiapkan bahan bantu mengajar masing-masing. Tahniah diucapkan. Antara peserta paling aktif yang telah berjaya membina bahan yang cantik adalah Puan Nurul Nalia. Cuba anda lihat hasil kerja yang dapat beliau siapkan sepanjang malam selepas beberapa jam bengkel dijalankan. Malah pada pukul 1.40 pagi beliau telah berjaya menerima beberapa tempahan bahan bantu mengajar. Sungguh mengujakan. Saya turut memetik komen-komen di facebook untuk anda juga menjadi lebih bersemangat.

Bila sekolah cuti...cikgu makan angin sampai kembung... eh ye ke?

Assalamualaikum

Nama je cuti sekolah...tapi kerja cikgu ni mana ada istilah cuti. Budak-budak bercuti sakan...cikgu pulak bergasak menyiapkan bahan-bahan yang nak digunakan di awal tahun nanti. Beginilah suasana rumah cikgu masa cuti sekolah... semua pakat duk angkut balik rumah sebab dah jemu duduk di sekolah. Kalau buat kerja di rumah ni sambil baring-baring (eh ya ke buat kerja begini boleh baring-baring?)... tak sibuk nak gosok baju, kain dan tudung.. sambil pakai baju kelawar (kesian kelawar habis bajunya dipakai manusia... kelawar kat Malaysia ni dah bogel belaka .. oppss.. ayat lucah tu) boleh siapkan kerja begini sampai ke malam. Jimat sikit duit minyak cikgu kan?..

Berikut ini adalah kerja-kerja masa cuti yang tersangatlah bercutinya seorang guru prasekolah seperti aku... orang kata jadi cikgu prasekolah ni tersangatlah rileks dan senang. Betul ke? Dah ler waktu mengajar 36 waktu seminggu sampai data dalam EMIS pun error... tapi siapa tahu? Sebab bila error kenalah guru data kurangkan masa tu sikit supaya betul... Kalau korang nak jadi cikgu prasekolah kenalah berfiikir 1000 kali selepas ini sebab cikgu prasekolah ni paling sikit dapat hadiah semasa hari guru... paling terpencil sebab duk sorang-sorang dalam kelas setiap hari bersama PPM sebab nak siapkan kerja yang sentiasa ada.. tak menanda buku.. mengemas.. tak mengemas... menanda buku... kalau dah lepak sangat... bubum kat kelas sebab dari pukul 7.10 pagi dah terpacak di depan pintu kelas sehingga pukul 11.30 pagi bertapa dalam kelas... maklum.. masa free hanya ketika ustaz atau ustazah masuk ke kelas.. itu pun 2 jam seminggu je.. masa PnP di prasekolah pula adalah 4 jam setiap hari. Horey begitulah indahnya hidup seharian di kelas prasekolah... kerja sampai pencen..

Sebut pasal kerja sampai pencen.. laratkah aku kerja sampai umur 60 tahun? Hari-hari duduk bertapa di kelas sampai kematu... Sedar-sedar dunia pun dah nak berakhir. Bila ikutkan waktu PnP 4 jam sehari bermakna masa makan aku adalah pukul 11.30 pagi.. hai ketarlah lutut nenek ni nanti. Itupun kalau bernasib baik ada sisa makanan di kantin. Nak makan dengan budak-budak prasekolah? Alahai.. baru nak menyuap makanan ada je yang "melepas" .. ada je yang "terkucil".. ada je yang "terbelahak".. sampai ada kala terpaksa menadah tangan ni untuk menadah muntah budak... ahhh begitulah seronok dan indahnya dunia cikgu prasekolah.. Jom ramai-ramai minta jadi cikgu prasekolah @ bibik mak bapak yang sokmo ambil anak lambat.. pasni bolehlah caj servis bibik.. sejam RM120.. ada berani?..

Cakap banyak pun tak guna.. jom layan keje aku hari ni...seronok woo...

Assalamualaikum

Seronok menyiapkan kad-kad ayat tukar ganti ini sebagai mengenang ilmu yang pernah saya terima dari arwah guru Bahasa Inggeris saya Allahyarham Cikgu Jaafar Adam. Beliau adalah guru yang menjadi idola saya semasa belajar di SK Bukit Lintang. Kerana dedikasi beliau, saya sering mendapat markah tertinggi di sekolah waktu itu. Maklumlah sekolah di kampung yang serba kekurangan. Saya juga berjaya mencapai markah B semasa menduduki Ujian Penilaian Darjah 5 (1973) walaupun ketika itu tiada kelas tambahan dijalankan di sekolah. Malah arwah juga sering memberikan saya hadiah galakan. Sehinggakan walau kalah sekali pun beliau pasti akan memberikan hadiah. Sewaktu Hari Guru, saya pasti mendapat hadiah yang lebih dari murid lain. Malah cikgu juga telah menamakan anaknya sempena nama saya. Mungkin kerana tiada anak perempuan, maka saya dianggap seperti anak beliau sendiri. Walaupun kini sudah puluhan tahun beliau kembali menemui Allah s.w.t.. ilmu dan dedikasi beliau tetap saya pegang sebagai sumber inspirasi. Terima kasih cikgu atas jasa-jasamu. Al-Fatihah.

1.1 Mengalu-alukan kehadiran ahli mesyuarat.

1.2 Menerangkan 3 aktiviti yang akan dilaksanakan – Bijak Prasekolah Bahasa Melayu, Bahasa Inggeris dan Matematik.

1.3 Lokasi pertandingan akan diadakan di SK Datuk Usman Awang – Dewan Seri Mutiara dan Dewan Seri Nilam

1.4 6 stesen akan diwujudkan. Stesen 2 akan dibuat di dalam bilik darjah – Tahun 1, Tahun 4 dan Makmal Sains.

1.5 Bijak Matematik dan menulis ayat mudah akan dibuat dalam bentuk ujian yang akan di adakan di kelas yang bakal ditetapkan..

1.6 Menyusun huruf menjadi perkataan hanya menggunakan kata dasar sahaja. Ada 4 tahap soalan iaitu membina ayat menggunakan 3, 4, 5 dan 6 perkataan. Setiapnya mengandungi 5 soalan dan dibuat mengikut warna.

Tindakan : Semua AJK Panel Penyediaan Bahan

2. Penyediaan bahan

2.1 Untuk stesen 1, papan flannel diperlukan sebanyak 6 buah.

2.2 Huruf-huruf dipotong ikut warna ( Bahasa Melayu- putih ), (Bahasa Inggeris – biru muda)

2.3 Mengandungi huruf vokal – 30 keping , konsonan – 15 keping kad bagi setiap abjad.

2.4 Bengkel akan diadakan dengan melibatkan guru-guru prasekolah Zon Bandar, zon Air Tawar dan Sedili pada 13 September 2011. Semua guru dan Pembantu Pengurusan Murid akan terlibat. Program akan diadakan di SK Tun Dr Syed Nasir.

2.5 Senarai peralatan yang perlu dibawa semasa bengkel adalah hot glue gun, gunting, plastik laminate, pisau, alatulis, komputer riba dan pencetak.

Tindakan : Hj Hasrin A. Samad dan guru-guru yang terlibat.

3. Hakim

3.1 18 orang hakim bakal terlibat dengan pertandingan yang akan berlangsung.

3.2 Stesen 1 Bahasa Inggeris – (Ketua ) Puan Zaiton bt Omar – Guru Cemerlang Bahasa Inggeris SK Taman Kota Jaya dengan dibantu oleh Puan Robak Iyah bt Isa – Guru Prasekolah SK Bandar Mas.

3.3 Stesen 1 Bahasa Melayu – (Ketua ) Puan Miskiah bt Asserah - Guru Prasekolah SK Muzaffar Shah dengan dibantu oleh Puan Siti Suraya bt Mokhtar – Guru Prasekolah SK Pasir Gogok.

3.4 Stesen 2 Bahasa Inggeris – (Ketua) Guru Bahasa Inggeris SK Seri Saujana dengan dibantu oleh Cik Aflaakhun Nisak bt Sukimi – Guru Prasekolah SK Seri Saujana.

3.5 Stesen 3 Bahasa Inggeris – (Ketua) Puan Norizam bt Mubin – Guru Bahasa Inggeris SK Datuk Usman Awang dengan dibantu oleh Puan Zanariah bt Nasir – Guru Prasekolah SK Mawai.

3.6 Stesen 3 Bahasa Melayu – (Ketua) Encik Samsul bin Wahab – Guru Prasekolah SK Sungai Papan dengan dibantu oleh Encik Hamidon bin Mohd Salleh – Guru Prasekolah SK Panchor.

3.7 Stesen 4 Bahasa Inggeris – (Ketua) Encik Mohd Fikry bin Zahry – Guru Bahasa Inggeris SK Tun Dr Syed Nasir dengan dibantu oleh Puan Umi Kalsom bt Samsi – Guru Prasekolah SK LKTP Air Tawar 1.

3.9 Stesen 5 Matematik – (Ketua ) Puan Fauziah bt A.Rahim –Guru Prasekolah SK Datuk Usman Awang dengan dibantu oleh Puan Norlidyana bt Surbani – Guru Prasekolah SK Sri Perani.

3.10 Puan Fauziah bt A.Rahim – Guru Prasekolah SK Datuk Usman Awang akan bertindak sebagai penyelaras /mastermind di sepanjang pertandingan dilaksanakan.

4. Hal-hal lain

4.1 Semua guru bersetuju bengkel diadakan di SK Tun Dr Syed Nasir pada 13 September 2011 kerana semua kelas prasekolah akan bercuti kerana peperiksaan UPSR.

4.2 Pembantu Pengurusan Murid akan dilibatkan sama semasa bengkel.

4.3 Puan Zanariah bt Nasir dilantik sebagai penyelaras pembelian bahan-bahan yang bakal digunakan semasa program dijalankan.

4.4 Puan Fauziah bt A.Rahim akan berusaha mendapatkan skema penghakiman dan syarat-syarat pertandingan dari Jabatan Pelajaran Selangor.

Once upon a time there was a farmer. He was very hardworking. He had an ox, a horse and a donkey who served him.
One day the ox told the farmer, "Master, you have a tractor now and you don't need me for ploughing. Please let me go so I can spend my last days in the forest."
The farmer let him go.
Then the horse said to him: "You don't need me either, master. You have a car now. Please let me go with the ox."
The farmer gave him permission to go.
Seeing the ox and horse go back to the forest, the donkey too wanted to go. But did not know what to tell the farmer. Suddenly the donkey got an idea.

What plan did the donkey think of? Was it able to go to the forest with the Ox and horse?

The Big Turnip

The Big Turnip

Once there lived a farmer in a small village in Kerala.
He had a turnip farm and one day he sent the servant out to gather all the ripe turnips.
The servant went into the field and started collecting ripe turnips.
To his surprise, he found he just could not pull out one particularly large turnip, despite all efforts.
The servant tried again and again, but could not succeed.
The man shouted for his master.
The master came running.
Together they started pulling the turnip out of the ground, but it was of no use.
So the farmer shouted for his wife.
His wife came running.
The three of them tried hard to pull it out. Again the turnip refused to budge!
The farmer's wife shouted for their son.
The son came running.
Together they tried hard to pull it out. No it is not coming out.
The son shouted for his wife.
The son’s wife came running.
Now all the five started pulling with all their might.
A mouse came out of its hole to see what was happening.
Oh they were trying to pull out the largest turnip.
I should help them after all I am surviving on their corps. The mouse said to himself.
The mouse burrowed under the ground and soon reached near the turnip.
There were large roots holding the turnip.
If I cut the roots with my teeth, surely they can pull it out, thought the mouse.
So he started biting the roots one by one.
He was about to cut the last root and suddenly it happened!

Think! Think again!
What might have happened there at that time?
Complete the story to give it a funny ending.

Paper Plate Animals

Paper plate animals are a wonderfully versatile craft that children can make for any animal-themed lesson or activity.
Materials Paper plate Any water-based paint White glue Scissors Paint brush Wiggle eyes Construction paper Crayons or markers Craft stick, pompoms, other decorative materials

Steps

	1.	Think about what animal you want to make Imagine a paper plate to be the animal's head. What do you need to decorate the paper plate with to make it more look like the animal you have in mind?
	2.	Make the ears and other special parts The next step involves cutting out head parts that need to be painted the same color as the head. For most animals, this will involve cutting out a pair of ears out of construction paper or cardboard.
		Some animals, like the elephant, will need additional parts, like its long trunk.
	3.	Attach the ears With the paper plate's right side up, glue the pair of ears on either side of the plate. Allow the glue to dry.
		If your animal has other parts that need to be glued on, flip the paper plate over so that the bottom side is facing up, before gluing on the trunk or other head parts.
	4.	Paint the animal Remember to position the paper plate bottom side up with the ears glued at the back. Paint the animal with any water-based paint.
		Paint on some spots or stripes if your animal has these patterns. You can finger paint or use a paint brush. If you want to try something new, you can make your own potato stamps or fruit and vegetable stamps to make the animal patterns. After you're done painting, allow the paint to dry completely.
	5.	Add eyes When the paint has dried, you can add the remaining facial features. To make the eyes, you can glue on wiggle eyes, buttons or paper cut-outs.
	6.	Make the nose and mouth For a lot of animals, you can simply draw or paint on the nose and mouth. Examples are shown below that include a leopard, tiger and lion. Some animals like this giraffe, have snouts. To make a snout, cut out an oval shape from construction paper and draw the animal's nostrils and mouth on it. You can use crayons, oil pastels, colored pencils or markers for drawing.
		Glue the snout onto to the paper plate head. To make the animal's head a little less round, position the snout so that it protrudes a little bit along the bottom of the plate. You can do this with long-faced animals such as giraffes, horses, cows or goats.
	7.	Additional details You can add additional details if you like. This giraffe needs a pair of horns and I made them by cutting a craft stick in half and gluing them at the back of the paper plate. The craft sticks can be colored or painted before gluing on circles out of construction paper at the tips of the horns.
	8.	This giraffe illustrates the basic steps for making paper plate animals. More ideas for making these animals are presented in the section below.

More Ideas

	Paper Plate Tiger and Leopard Children will surely enjoy exploring and painting the different patterns and colors that animals have. This craft can also be used to learn about the similarities and differences of animals belonging to the same family or classification.
	Paper Plate Lion The important detail for making a lion is its mane. Cut out strips of brown construction paper or crepe paper and glue these around the back edge of the paper plate.
	Paper Plate Elephant As shown in the tutorial above (Step 3), a long trunk out of cardboard or construction paper is attached to the paper plate prior to painting. The lines or creases can be painted on or drawn with a crayon. When using a crayon, make sure the painted paper plate is dry before drawing the lines or other details.
	Paper Plate Puppy If you don't feel like making a messy craft, you can skip the painting step altogether. This puppy just needed brown paper cut-outs for the ears and the patch around the eyes. The nose was cut out from thick craft foam to give it a more three-dimensional feel.
	Paper Plate Rabbit To add fluff to this rabbit, a pompom was glued on for the nose and a fluffy snout was created out of cotton.
	Paper Plate Zebra The steps for making this zebra are almost identical to that of the giraffe except for the tufts of hair at the top of the zebra's head. To make these hair (or mane), cut thin strips of black construction paper and glue these at the back of the paper plate, in the area between the ears.
	Paper Plate Cow Craft sticks are great for making animal horns although you can also make horns out of construction paper or cardboard.

Ada banyak bahan-bahan yang telah dihasilkan oleh rakan-rakan guru yang mendaftar di dalam kumpulan Preschool Shoppe di Facebook. Ada yang diberi percuma dan ada yang dijual dengan harga yang sangat murah. Pendek kata berbaloi-baloi. Alhamdulillah akhirnya penubuhan kumpulan ini sudah banyak mengubah minda rakan-rakan guru...ramai yang sudah mula rajin membina bahan sendiri. Tidaklah asyik mahu membeli pada pembekal-pembekal yang datang ke sekolah yang ada kalanya harga amat mencekik darah. Kepada yang baru mengetahui kewujudan kumpulan ini dipersilakan untuk menyertainya. Pertandingan mencipta bahan bantu mengajar turut dijalankan. Tarikh tutupnya hujung minggu ini. Apa tunggu lagi?

Assalamualaikum

Lama juga tidak menulis di ruangan ini. Sejak beberapa bulan kebelakangan ini saya lebih seronok berada di laman sesawang Facebook. Kumpulan Preschool Shoppe yang saya tubuhkan sejak Mac 2011 sehingga ke saat entri ini ditulis telah mencatatkan sejumlah 2811 ahli berdaftar . Di sini jugalah saya membantu sedikit sebanyak rakan-rakan guru untuk membina bahan bantu mengajar mereka sendiri di samping menjana pendapatan yang boleh digunakan di kelas masing-masing. Hari ini saya telah cuba menyediakan cara-cara membina kad huruf titik yang tidak memerlukan dakwat berwarna. Maklumlah warna pencetak sekarang ini agak mahal. Bahan ini bukan sahaja memberikan kepuasan kepada guru, tetapi mendidik jiwa guru untuk sabar dan tekun membuat bahan berkenaan,

Langkah 1:
Cetak gambar Pooh pada kertas berwarna jingga.

Cetak bahagian baju Pooh menggunakan kertas berwarna biru. Cetak juga bahagian topi menggunakan kertas berwarna merah.

Langkah 3:

Gunting bahagian-bahagian baju dan topi. Tampal pada kertas asas berwarna jingga tadi. Maka terhasillah kad secomel ini. Laminate bahan ini supaya boleh digunakan berulangkali. Anda hanya perlu menyediakan whiteboard marker dan pemadam. Latih anak-anak seawal usia 3 tahun untuk menulis huruf-huruf titik ini. Anda boleh pelbagaikan gambar dengan menggunakan gambar yang anak-anak suka.

How to Save Any File as a PDF File

Office 207 has PDF support, letting users save files in PDF. But what if you want to save Office files in PDF now. Or, better yet, save any type of file in PDF (OneNote, Journal, Internet Explorer, etc). You can and it is free!

All you need to do is install a virtual pdf printer on your computer. A virtual printer acts like a real printer but it is all software. It shows up under “Printers and Faxes”, has page properties, etc. If you can print something, you can make it into a PDF file.

There are a number of virtual pdf printers. My favorite is CutePDF Writer and best of all, it is free. Getting PDF support is a two step process.

Download and install the Free Converter (converts the data in your application).
Download and install CutePDF Writer (creates the actual PDF file).

When you want to create a PDF file, go to “File“, “Print“, select the “CutePDF Writer” from the list of printers, and click “Print“. That’s it! CutePDF automatically acts you to name the file and where to save it. Below is an example from my computer. I am saving my recitation notes from my Digital Signal Processing class to PDF so I can share with my friends.

Step 1 Cut out the shoe shapes plus as many straps as your child wants. Tape the straps in place using masking, duct, or packing tape. How to Teach Kids Vowels

After we go through the alphabet sounds chart, the next thing to do is to isolate the five vowels because vowels are very very difficult to distinguish for young children. As easy as it is for us because we've been doing it for years and years, a lot of children, they hear the aa, the ee and the ii, especially of the first three and they smush them up and aa, just eh, sounds like the same thing to them, especially when they're reading so we're going to teach them to isolate the finite distinct differences between these five letter sounds and so we'll start by having them repeat after you, say a, aaa, like in aaapple, eh like in eeelephant, ii, like in ii, ohh, like in octopus, uh, like in umbrella. Now be very very strict with this, don't allow them to go uh if they mean oh, don't allow them to, if you hear the slightest sound that doesn't quite sound like the vowel you want, make them do it over, say it again, make them do it over, drill it into them. The more you do in the very beginning, the more it won't be an issue down the road and they won't be reading the word r e d as rad or rid, they'll read it as red. So what I do, I have them say each one and I have them do each one perfectly and then I go back and I say, now what is this sound say? Aa, if I get a good aa, like in apple, I like it. Eh, if I get a good eh is good, eh like you're at the dentist office, eh, keep your mouth open, you can even draw a face there where that's the open mouth. And then ii, sometimes I say pretend you're hitting the stomach and then I jump around and I say tell me this one, aa, eh, ii, and I go a little faster and faster if they can keep up with it until they get it like that and they see the letter and they know the sound and they don't have to think and they don't mush it.

How to Teach Action Words to Kindergarten Children

It's important for us to teach action words to children so that they know some common verbs that they can recognize while they're reading. One of the best ways to teach action words to children would be to create a word wall of action words. Now this is just simply any space that you have in your classroom that you can place the walls in alphabetical order so that they can see what words belong. Another thing that I would do when teaching action words is to find a picture that illustrates the action, and place it on the card as well. Here are a few action words to help get you started. Keep in mind that when teaching action words or verbs to young children, you should emphasize that any word is an action word is something that can be completed or an action that can be done. These words are ones that are easily acted out by children. A great game that you can play with the students is to provide them with an action doll that you then practice in making the action doll complete into the actions. After the child has been able to master the actions that appear on this list, things like run, jump, hop, you can then move on to action words that not quite as easily displayed. These might include playing, shopping, buying, some other words that you would want to introduce to them as well. Remember the best way to teach these to them is through repeated exposure and allow them the opportunity to act out the words on their own. When teaching the action words to children, the best way to do it is to introduce them in one to two words per week. I would teach them to the child by first acting the word out on their own, and then have each of the children mimic your actions. Repeatedly do this over and over while displaying the word to them until the children have mastered the word. Then the word may go on the wall so that it may be referred to when either reading or writing as part of a group or independent lesson.

How Can a Teacher Teach Phonics to Young Children?

One of the largest tasks that kindergarten teacher has in the classroom is teaching phonics to young children. Now, phonics actually means the associating a letter sound with a letter. For example, M would say mmm, and C would say kuh. So you not only want to teach children not only to recognize the letter but to recognize the sound that the letter makes. I would say that the best ways to introduce phonics to young children would include introducing one to two letters per week. This way, they're not overwhelmed and they're able to grasp what the letter, as well as it's sound. I would also recommend not introducing the letters in the order of the alphabet because often, child will rely simply on their knowledge of the alphabet song to complete their letters. I would try to introduce it in a mixed up fashion. Another tip that I would have for you in introducing phonics to young children would be to teach the short vowel sounds first. Disperse the vowels in there so maybe introduce four or five consonant and then a vowel. And I would say after every eight to ten letters, take a couple, take a week or so to review those and recap before you move on. Repetition is thee best way to introduce letters to children. Show it to them in every way, shape and form. Surround this learning centers that you may have in this classroom with these letters, create letter collages, do some hands on activities. You can actually teach these letters to the kiddos using hands on materials such as play-dough, practicing writing the letters in sand, just so they understand and thee entire time you'll want to repeatedly tell them the sound a letter makes. After they've mastered each of the letter individual sounds, you can start working on blending them together.

How to Teach Vowel Sounds to Kindergartners

When teaching letters to young children, take plenty of time to cover each of the five vowels. These are very important for children. Oftentimes when children begin writing they'll leave out the vowel sounds in the middle. I like to call these the middle mystery letters. Take the time to show the children the sounds that each of the vowels make. I like to refer back to the classic letter people when I use the vowel sounds. When I practice A I always have my children make an A with their hands like they're sneezing, and we always say Ahhh-choo, so they learn that Ahhh sound belongs with A. When learning the letter E we like to pretend that we're exercising so the key - the children always go Eh, eh, exercise as they're learning that E says eh. I is one of my favorite letters to teach because the children have a lot of fun. We always teach children that I says "i" and we always go itchy, itchy, i-i-i, as if we're scratching all over our bodies. When we practice the letter O I always tell children that it's the sound that you make at the doctor's office, you always open up and say Ohhhh, and you can say that your mouth makes an O, so when they say the word mop, their mouth is in the shape of an O. The last vowel that you'll want to teach them is the letter U and we always pretend we're putting uh, uh, up our umbrella. So that uh, uh, uh will constantly be reinforced. It's best to teach the children the short vowel sounds first. These are the ones that they'll use more commonly in their three letter words that they'll learn. After the children have mastered their short vowel sounds, then you'll want to take the time to introduce the long vowel sounds. Tell the children that the vowels say their name when it's in a long vowel, this is the difference between being at and rake. Teach the children that the vowels can say either short or long and they'll have to use other visual clues to help them. When they're ready you may even choose to introduce the concept of a silent E that often makes the letter say its name. But again, begin with the short vowel sounds, they're easiest for the kiddos to master at first.

What You’ll Need:

large round uninflated balloon
funnel
1/2 cup flour
pencil with eraser
permanent marker

How to Make It:

Stretch the open end of an uninflated, large round balloon over the small end of a funnel.
Pour about 1/2 cup of flour into the funnel and balloon. Use the eraser end of a pencil to force the flour into the balloon. Add more flour to the funnel, a bit at a time, filling the balloon as much as you can.
When you can’t force any more flour into the balloon, hold the balloon by the neck and remove the funnel.
Tie a knot in the neck of the balloon and rinse off the extra flour.
Using a permanent marker, draw eyes, a mouth, gills, and fins on the fish.
To help yourself relax when you feel frustrated or nervous, squeeze your frustration fish and then relax your hand. Keep alternating between squeezing the fish and relaxing your grip until you feel calmer.

Water Bottle Fish Craft

What you will need: Plastic water bottle, tissue paper, scissors, white glue, paint brush, and colored paper.

How to Make the pop bottle fish:

1. Remove the label from the water bottle.

2. Hold the bottom of the bottle with one hand and grasp the bottle about two inches up from the bottom with the other hand. Twist the bottle like you would a balloon to make the tail fin. (See picture to the right)

3. Insert a pen or something long and skinny inside the bottle to punch out any areas that were dented in when you twisted the bottle.

4. Cut pieces of tissue paper into one-inch squares or irregular shapes.

5. Paint white glue on the bottle and stick the tissue paper squares on the glue to cover the entire bottle.

6. Cut fins from colored paper and glue to the fish to finish.

Glue plastic-foam balls (eyes) on center top of egg carton. Insert pushpins through carton, securing eyes on top.
Paint outside of carton and eyes purple and inside of carton pink. Let dry.
Glue wiggle eyes on eyes.
Paint “teeth" white. Use black dimensional paint to outline nostrils. Let dry.
Tuck treats, notes, and other special wishes inside box for teachers or friends!

Plastic Bottle Crafts

The idea is super easy. Here's what you'll need:

Materials

Empty 2 liter plastic bottles
White glue
Scissors
Markers
Acrylic paints
Paint brushes
Sandpaper
Stickers
Skewers

Instructions:

1. Cut the plastic bottle one-third of the way down from the top. Sand the bottle using sandpaper

2. Mark at least 5 "petals" using a waterproof marker. Cut along the lines to form "petals".

3. Coat with a layer of white glue and let dry.

4. Paint and decorate the petals using acrylic paints, waterproof markers and other stickers and glitter.

5. Poke a small hole through the bottle cap. Place a skewer through the hole and screw back onto the bottle.

A pet rabbit’s diet typically consists of unlimited Timothy hay, a small amount of pellets, and a small portion of fresh vegetables.

Rabbits are social animals. Rabbits as pets can find their companionship with a variety of creatures, including humans, other rabbits, guinea pigs, and sometimes even cats and dogs. Rabbits do not make good pets for small children because they do not know how to stay quiet, calm, and gentle around rabbits. As prey animals, rabbits are alert, timid creatures that startle easily. They have fragile bones, especially in their backs, that require support on the belly and bottom when picked up. Children 10 years old and older usually have the maturity required to care for a rabbit.

What you'll need:

18 place cardboard egg carton
Scraps of colorful patterned papers (wallpaper samples, old greeting cards) or construction paper
Acrylic paints: red, orange, brown, light blue, green, purple, yellow, white and pink
Scissors
2 black skinny chenille stems
9 flat-backed heavy pebbles, marbles, or other object
White yarn
2 heavy twigs or craft dowels
9 medium black pom poms
18 small wiggle eyes
White craft glue
Acrylic sealer spray
Paintbrush
Hot glue gun

How to make it:

Remove the lid of the cardboard egg carton and save for another project. Place bottom of egg carton upside down and paint two sections with each color noted above (i.e. 2 red, 2 orange, 2 brown, etc). Repeat for a second coat and let dry. Spray all painted cups with acrylic sealer spray. See image.
Cut the egg carton sections apart. Trim around the sections so that all you have left are colored cups. See image.
If using patterned paper, most likely the backside of the paper is blank. If this is the case, fold the patterned paper in half, pattern on the outside. Put a layer of glue in between and stick together. This will create a piece of patterned paper that is patterned on both sides. If using construction paper this step is not necessary.
Cut leaf-shaped wings from the paper.
Separate the colored egg cups so that you have two groups of nine cups, one of each color.
Turn one group of colored cups over, set the other group aside.
Squeeze some white glue into each of the cups that are turned upward. Place a flat-backed marble into each cup and allow time for the glue to dry. This will give each bug enough weight that they will hang nicely on your mobile and will cut down on the lines tangling together. It will also help the bugs to “look” downward so that they are seen from the ground.
Cut 9 pieces of yarn about 18” long each.
Onto each of the egg cup halves with the marble in them, glue a black pom pom to the closed (bottom) end. Now pair up your colored egg cups.
To assemble each bug body you will need a pair of the same colored egg cups, a set of paper wings, an 18” piece of yarn and your hot glue gun. Pipe a layer of hot glue onto the outer open edge of the egg cup with the marble in it, place the wings onto the glue, the yarn in the middle of the open cup at the top, and then the other egg cup goes on last. Repeat these steps for each bug.
Now that the bodies are assembled you can glue the wiggle eyes onto the black pom poms.
Cut the black chenille stems into 2” pieces. Bend the ends or twist them around a thin handled paintbrush. Put a dot of hot glue on the straight end and push into the top of the pom pom. Repeat for the other antenna. See image.
Cut another piece of yarn about 12” in length. Crisscross the two dowels and wrap with yarn to secure, add a dot of glue to reinforce. Be sure there is enough yarn left over to tie a loop at the top to hang your mobile from.
Tie each bug onto the dowels, two on each ‘arm” and one in the middle. Stagger the lengths and tie in place. When you have them where you want them, trim the excess. See image.

Tips:

You can decorate your bugs even more by painting on stripes or adding dots.
If you use construction paper, kids can decorate the paper wings with stickers, markers, glitter, etc.
Try recycling old speaker wires for the antennas instead of chenille stems.

Yarn Bug

Aqua Yarn

Two 3/4" White Pompoms
Two 1/2" Pink Pompoms

2-1/2" Styrofoam Balls
5" Square of Cardboard
Tacky Glue
Scissors

Instructions:

Make a pompon by wrapping yarn around floppy disk (or heavy cardboard) as least 100 times. Cut a 6" piece of yarn and slide it under wrapped yarn. Tie tightly into a double knot. Turn floppy over and cut completely through yarn on this side. Turn yarn blob sideways and smooth down strands.

Ask on adult to slice off the bottom of the Styrofoam ball so it stands on end. Cover the top and sides of the ball with tacky glue. Separate the strands of the pompon to fit the Styrofoam egg up inside. Press pompon into place. Arrange yarn.

Cut pipe cleaners in half. Poke through yarn and into Styrofoam ball. Bend four for legs. Gently curl the two for antennae. Glue two white pompoms for eyes, and two pink pompoms for antennae tips. Punch holes out of craft foam and glue on all around bug. Glue two black holes on pompom for pupils on the eyes.

Print any patterns your bug might need. Staple all around patterns onto craft foam or felt as listed in the supply list. Cut out pieces. Glue the bottom of the Styrofoam ball on to the foam feet. Glue on eyes. For optional arms, cut the pipe cleaner in half. Glue on hands. Poke the pipe cleaners into the bug for arms. Bend at the elbows. Glue on the wiggle eyes.

Cut two small pieces of pipe cleaner for antennae. String a pom bead on each end. Bend to hold in place. Push into top of head.

1. Begin the lamb craft by clicking here to open up a PDF file of the patterns for the body and head (a new window will open, Adobe Reader required). Print this out on white card stock, and then cut out the patterns.

2. Next, cut off the heads of cotton swabs. If a child is making this craft, be sure an adult does this part. Make each cotton swab end about 1/2 inch long.

3. Begin gluing the cotton swab tips to the card stock body of the sheep, beginning at the back of the body. Then, layer more cotton swabs across the body. Use the photos below to guide you.

4. Next, glue two cotton swab tips to the side of the head to be the ears, as shown below.

5. To make the lamb's "hair", cut three cotton swab tips off right at the head of the swab; they will be about 1/4 long. Layer and glue these to the top of the head as shown.

6. Use some markers to add on some cute facial features for the lamb.

7. Tie the ribbon in a small bow, and glue it to the top of the lamb's head.

8. Glue two wooden clothespins to the back of the lamb's body. Check for balance and levelness when the glue is tacky, by standing the lamb up. Readjust the legs as necessary. Then allow them to dry completely.

Instructions

Color Hard-boiled Eggs: Before you begin decorating, cover your worktable with newsprint. Set out plastic cups with assorted colors of prepared egg dye, either homemade (For each color, stir one cup of hot water and one teaspoon of white vinegar in a plastic cup. Then stir in 10 to 20 drops of concentrated food coloring) or store-bought. Have a roll of paper towels on hand and plenty of hard-boiled white eggs. Let the kids take turns submerging eggs into the dye until the eggs reach a desired shade. Gently blot excess dye with a paper towel. Set the eggs atop plastic bottle caps to dry. For eyes and spots, draw circles on the eggs with a birthday candle or crayon before submerging them in the dye.
Sheep: To make this brown egg in sheep's clothing, glue on cotton balls and brown paper ears. Draw on eyes with permanent black marker.
Craft Pipe Cleaner Legs: Set the decorated animal on a pipe cleaner stand. To make one, bend a pipe cleaner into an oval and twist it closed, using the excess as a tail. Cut a second pipe cleaner in half. Wrap one half around the back of the oval to form the back legs; wrap the other half around the front to create the front legs. Bend the ends into feet.

Fluffy Sheep

Look what happened to our pompom sheep when we took our kitchen scissors to it! If you really want to make your pompom fluffy sheep look just like Shaun, before you stick the legs on your pompom sheep, have had a look at our latest advanced model of Shaun the Sheep. All you need is an old sock and a glue gun and your sheep will have a woolly jumper to keep him warm, just like Shaun’s.

And now you don't even need wool to make a pompom, so you can get going on this project right away! An orange sheep... I don't think so, but then plenty of plastic carrier bags come in white, and if you use a black bin liner (refuse sack) then you really could make the black sheep of the family. Yes, a great way to reuse those plastic grocery bags, is by using them to make your pompoms. If you tie off the pompom with more plastic bag, then you can still recycle the finished pompom as if it was a normal plastic bag. You can also use black, white or green dustbin liners, or sandwich bags, which come in a range of subtle colours. Plastic bag pompoms will work for any of the Funky Pompom projects on dadcando. To make them all you do is replace the wool steps with the plastic bag. To make it easier to thread, you might want to cut the bag into wide strips, but as long as you can thread the bag through the centre of the discs then it's ok. A plastic bag pompom has a glossy slippery finish that is much softer than you would imagine and is a good alternative to wool.

Tip for group craft:

Dye pieces ahead of time to keep mess and time to a minimum. You can do this by soaking the wooden pieces in traditional fabric dye dissolved in water or try soaking in concentrated kool-aid. You can even use dried out markers. Just remove the pads from inside the barrels and place in a tub of water with wooden pieces.

Instructions:

Cut and stack three 6" squares of pink cellophane. Hold two candy kisses together, lining up the flat bottoms, and wrap the kisses with the cellophane. Twist the cellophane to secure. Hold wrapped kisses against the end of the wooden skewer and wrap tightly with a green pipe cleaner, winding down the stick. Add more pipe cleaners as necessary. Add some glue to secure if desired.

Cut three leaves from craft foam with decorative edge scissors. Glue behind the rose bud. Cut a heart from pink craft foam. Punch a hole and write your message. String a ribbon through the hole and tie onto the rose. Make a bow.

Flowered Basket

Instructions: Cut heavy ivory paper into approximately a 16" circle with a 7" circle drawn in the middle. The inner circle will be the basket bottom. Trim area around this into 1" radiating strips. Bend radiating strips up at dotted lines to begin to form basket side.
Cut about eight 1" x 24" strips out of the same paper. Beginning close to the bottom of basket, weave one of these strips in and out of the radiating strips all the way around the basket. Cut off or add extra piece to complete first woven level. Secure ends with tacky glue. Weave two or three more levels.
Fold or cut excess radiating strips even with the top level. To make the handle, wrap one of the precut strips (we'll call this the core) with another precut strip as shown: Secure ends with tacky glue. Continue with additional strips until the handle core is covered. Trim ends. Glue to inside of basket.
Cut out flowers and leaves. Printed side will be the back of the flowers and leaves. Bend pieces up slightly on the dotted lines. This will add depth to the flowers. Assemble flowers by layering pieces. Use a small dot of glue in the center of each piece to secure. Punch out small circles with a standard whole punch for flower centers. Here are some examples of how your flowers could look: Glue the flowers around the basket. Glue on leaves, tucking them under flower petals.

Handprint Flowers Mother's Day Gift

What you'll need:

Construction paper (many colors)

How to make your Handprint Flowers Mother's Day Gift:

Trace your child's hand on the construction paper. Make sure that you trace a little bit of the wrist as well.
Cut out the handprint.
Use a pencil or marker and roll each finger around it to create some curl.
Lay the handprint on the table so the fingers curl out towards the table. Pick up the flower, wrap it around, and tape the ends together at the wrist section.
To make the stem either tape end of the flower around a green straw, or tightly roll a piece of green construction paper and tape or glue the flower to that.
Cut leaves out of green construction paper and tape or glue to the stem (if using a straw, tape works better than glue).
Make as many as you like and give them to Mom on her special day!

The stages of the handprint flower craft

Alphabet Book

Throughout the year, the kids create an alphabet book to take home and it is filled with crafts that they make - each letter of the alphabet having it's own craft. The apple craft we did last year went over really well, so we did that one again this year.

You'll need:

~ Red construction paper apple
~ White rectangle piece of construction paper
~ Black inkpad
~ Green construction paper leaves

To Make:

1. Have your child cut out the apple if they are able to use scissors {we cut them out ahead of time due to limited time}.
2. Let your child rip the apple in half, horizontally.
3. Rip the white piece of paper on both sides, so the apple 'core' appears to be eaten.
4. Have your child stamp their fingerprint on the white 'core' of the apple to make seeds.

Art

I can't take credit for this too-cute alligator Aa. No Time for Flash Cards has directions for the craft. We used foam sheets that I picked up at the Dollar Tree along with construction paper teeth and googly eyes. Super fun and a cute take home for the kids to remember the letter we studied!

Math

Apples were the primary focus of the week, so during our circle times we had several different activities we used to focus on different math skills.

Sequencing

I printed off a page of different sized apples from File Folder Fun and cut them out and the kids took turns putting them in order from smallest to largest.

Apple Tree felt board ~ How does an apple grow? I have a cute little apple tree that we used on the floor to show how apples grow. We put flower blossoms on the tree first and then they 'grew' into big and little apples. We picked the apples off the tree and sorted them by big and little and counted to see which one we had more of.

Cuisenaire Rods ~ We used cuisenaire rods to build the letter Aa. First we used the big rods and then tried using the little ones. We also made an apple tree, airplane and an alligator with the rods {this is something I did with Zachary, not the class!}. :)

Science

The biggest hit of the day revolved around taste-testing apples. I brought in three different colors of apples and sliced them up. Everybody took a bite of each apple slice and then we talked about how the apples tasted {sweet, sour, tangy, etc...}, the different colors of the apples, and everyone voted on their favorite tasting apple and we graphed the results.

Golden Delicious was the winner by ONE vote...why those kiddos liked the Granny Smith is beyond me....

Songs and Rhymes

During our circle time we did several songs and games together. After reading through The Lady with the Alligator Purse, I sang the song to them while 'reading' the book again {I love that book!}.

Weave a Strawberry Basket

A tisket, a tasket; want to weave a basket? Using an old strawberry basket, show your child how to make a pretty basket with a handle—a great way to celebrate Little Red Riding Hood. Weaving ribbons through the holes is good for hand-eye coordination and patience. She can use pastels to make this into a darling Easter or spring-themed basket, or simply track down ribbons in her favorite colors.

What You Need:

A plastic strawberry basket
Thin ribbon (such as gift wrap ribbon) in pretty colors
A pipe cleaner
Beads

What You Do:

Have your child thread the ribbons through the holes in the basket. There’s no need to tie them. It’s painstaking work, but great practice in developing fine motor skills.
Invite her to string the beads on the pipe cleaner, leaving at least an inch free at each end.
Twist the pipe cleaner into a curved handle with the beads at the top.
Loop one end of the pipe cleaner through one side of the basket and twist closed.
Have her repeat the same techniques on the other side.

Running Record

What is a Running Record?
A running record allows you to assess a student's reading performance as she/he reads from a benchmark book. Benchmark books are books selected for running record assessment purposes. A running record form, with text from the book printed on the form, accompanies each of the benchmark books. Only the first 100 -150 words of the longer benchmark books are used for the upper level running records. A blank running record form is supplied for teachers who wish to perform running records on books other than the benchmark books or for additional text from the upper level benchmark books.

There are conflicting views on whether students should be assessed using a book they have never read versus using a book they are familiar with. We believe using a book that has not been previously read will give a more accurate measure of a student's ability to handle text at the assessed level. For this reason, we provide two benchmark books at each level: one fiction and one non-fiction. You can always opt to read the book before doing a running record if you prefer using previously-read text for your running record.

After completing a running record, you may want to assess a student's comprehension of the book read. Reading A-Z provides Retelling Rubrics for this purpose. Both fiction and non-fiction Retelling Rubrics are provided.

Taking a Running Record
Running records are taken most often at the earlier stages of reading. Students who are not progressing at the expected rate should be assessed even more frequently than the schedule suggested below.

Early Emergent readers (Levels aa – C): every 2 to 4 weeks
Emergent readers (Levels D – J): every 4 to 6 weeks
Early fluent readers (Levels K – P): every 6 to 8 weeks
Fluent readers (Levels Q – Z): every 8 to 10 weeks

Taking a running record takes practice. Before attempting a running record, read the procedural steps below, then go to the section on Marking a Running Record Form.

Select a book that approximates the student's reading level. Explain that she/he will read out loud as you observe and record her/his reading skills.
With the running record form in hand, sit next to the student so that you can see the text and the student's finger and eye movements as she/he reads the text.
As the student reads, mark each work on the running record form by using the appropriate Running Record Symbols and Marking Conventions shown below. Place a checkmark above each work that is read correctly.
If the student reads incorrectly, record above the word what the student reads.
If the student is reading too fast for you to record the running record, ask her/him to pause until you catch up.
Be sure to pay attention to the reader's behavior. Is the student using meaning (M), structural (S), and visual (V) cues to read words and gather meaning?
Intervene as little as possible while the student is reading.
If the student is stuck and unable to continue, wait 5 to 10 seconds, then tell her/him the word. If the student seems confused, provide an explanation to clear up the confusion and say, "Try again."

Marking a Running Record Form
Several terms are used when marking a running record form. You should become familiar with these terms by reviewing the explanations below.

Errors (E)--Errors are tallied during the reading whenever a child does any of the following:

--Substitutes another word for a word in the text
--Omits a word
--Inserts a word
--Has to be told a word

Self-correction (SC)--Self-correction occurs when a child realizes her or his error and corrects it. When a child makes a self-correction, the previous substitution is not scored as an error.
Meaning (M)--Meaning is part of the cueing system in which the child takes her or his cue to make sense of text by thinking about the story background, information from pictures, or the meaning of a sentence. These cues assist in the reading of a word or phrase.
Structure (S)--Structure refers to the structure of language and is often referred to as syntax. Implicit knowledge of structure helps the reader know if what she or he reads sounds correct.
Visual (V)--Visual information is related to the look of the letters in a word and the word itself. A reader uses visual information when she or he studies the beginning sound, word length, familiar word chunks, and so forth.

There are two steps to marking a running record. Step 1 involves marking the text on the running record form as the student reads from the benchmark book. Before taking your first running record, become familiar with the symbols used to mark a running record form. These symbols are found in Table 1. Also review the Sample Running Record to see how a completed form looks. It also is a good idea to take a few practice running records by role-playing with a fellow teacher as she/he plays the role of a developing reader, intentionally making errors for you to record.

Once the student has read all the text on the running record form and you have recorded their reading behavior, you can complete Step 2. In Step 2 you fill in the boxes to the right of the lines of text you have marked. Begin by looking at any error the student has made in the first line. Mark the number of errors made in the first box to the right of the line. If the student self corrected any of these errors, mark the number of self-corrections in the second box to the right of the line. Next determine whether the errors and self-corrections were made as a result of meaning, structure, or visual cueing. For a description of each of these cues, review the explanations provided above. Write MSV in each box for each error and a self-correction made and circle the appropriate letter for the cue used by the student.

After completing step two you should total the number of errors and self-corrections and write each total in the box at the bottom of the appropriate column. Next calculate the student's error rate, accuracy rate, and self-correction rate, found in the next section Scoring and Analyzing a Running Record.

You do not have to mark the MSV cueing portion of the running record form. It is simply used to help you further analyze a student's reading behavior and provide deeper insight into a student's possible reading deficiencies. You can still use the information on error, self-correction, and accuracy rates to place the student at the developmentally appropriate instructional level.

Scoring and Analyzing a Running Record
Scoring: The information gathered while doing a running record is used to determine error, accuracy, and self-correction rates. Directions for calculating these rates are given below. The calculated rates, along with qualitative information and the student's comprehension of the text, are used to determine the student's reading level.
Qualitative Analysis: The qualitative analysis is based on observations that you make during the running record. It involves observing how the student uses the meaning (M), structural (S), and visual (V) cues to help her/him read. It also involves paying attention to fluency, intonation, and phrasing. Think back to the prompts you offered and how the student responded. These observations help you form a picture of the student's reading development.

Error Rate
Error rate is expressed as a ratio and is calculated by using the following formula:

Total words / Total errors = Error rate

Example:
99 / 8 = 12.38, or 12 rounded to nearest whole number
The ratio is expressed as 1:12.
This means that for each error made, the student read approximately 12 words correctly.

Accuracy Rate
Accuracy rate is expressed as a percentage. You can calculate the accuracy rate using the following formula:
(Total words read – Total errors) / Total words read x 100 = Accuracy rate

Example:
(99 – 8) / 99 x 100 = Accuracy rate
91/99 x 100 = Accuracy rate
.919 x 100 = 91.9%, or 92% rounded to the nearest whole number

You can use accuracy rate to determine whether the text read is easy enough for independent reading, appropriate to use without frustration during reading instruction purposes instruction, or too difficult for the reader. The breakdown of these three categories is as follows:

Easy enough for independent reading = 95 – 100%
Instructional level for use in leveled reading session = 90 – 94%
Too difficult and will frustrate the reader = 89% and below

Self-Correction Rate
Self-correction rate is expressed as a ratio and is calculated by using the following formula:

(Number of errors + Number of self corrections) / Number of self corrections = Self-correction rate

Example:
(8 + 3) / 3 = Self-correction rate
11 / 3 = 3.666, or 4 rounded to the nearest whole number

The self-correction rate is expressed as 1:4. This means that the student corrects approximately 1 out of every 4 errors.

If a student is self-correcting at a rate of 1:4 or less, this indicates that she/he is self-monitoring her/his reading.

Arts and Crafts

Masks
Give each child a paper bag to fit over their head. Help them to cut out openings for eyes, nose and mouth. Supply a variety of materials for them to decorate their masks. Or use a paper plate and cut out eye holes and decorate. Attach a popsicle stick to the back edge.

"Me" Book
Have each of the children bring 4 or 5 snapshot-sized pictures from home. Use Zip Lock baggies for the children to insert 2 pictures front to back. You can insert a cardboard between the pictures to make it more sturdy. Add 2 binders on the zipper end and the children can flip through their own book.

Magic Wands
Make magic wand with straws and any type of streamers, ribbon etc. Decorate it any way you like, tape on the ends.

Macaroni Necklaces
These can be colored with markers or dipped in watercolors, let dry, and string.

Marble Art
Materials
tongs
toilet paper or paper towel tubes
paper
variety of different sized marbles
tempera paint poured into shallow containers
Directions:
Have the children pick up a marble with the tongs and dip it into the paint. Drop the marble on the paper. Move the marble around with the tube, holding the tube just above the paper so as not to rub the tube on the paper. When they are finished with one color, pick up the marble with the tongs. Get another marble and pick it up with the tongs and dip it into a different colored paint. Drop it onto the paper and use a clean tube to move it around. Use several different sized marbles and several colors of paint. Remember, the finished product does not matter although there will be an interesting printed paper when they are finished.

"Me" Poster
For older children have them make a "me" poster. Give each child a large sheet of paper and have them draw a picture of themselves. Have them draw or write important things about themselves- what they like, don't like, favorites, and so on. Title the posters All about Me or My favorite things.

Make an M collage
Give each child a sheet of paper and lots of items to work with such as macaroni, mini stickers, masking tape, mirrors, anything they can glue to paper that starts with the letter M. Give them magazines to look for items. Also have them think of things that start with the letter M that they can use.

Make Medals
Cut out tag board circles. Punch a hole on one edge. Set out markers, ribbons, glitter, etc depending on the age of the children. Let them decorate their medals. Place a ribbon or yarn through the hole to create a necklace.

Mushrooms
Make mushroom prints by cutting mushrooms in half and pressing in paint then on paper or fabric.

Monster
Have the children draw a monster. For younger children, use this opportunity to talk about monsters, and how they're not really hiding under the bed, in the closet, etc.

Moose
Make a moose head band, and attach antlers like a moose.
